Pick a Colour Palette to Sell Your Home

Spring will soon be in the air and you may be thinking of selling your home. Sprucing up your house with a little paint will always make your home brighter and fresher. What paints do you use and how do you make the colour scheme work for your home? Below are some ideas to help you get started.

Take a critical tour of your home. If your home is open concept remember that you must carry your colours through to complement each other. Build your colours with the same hues. Once you have decided on a specific neutral colour on a paint chip, you will notice that there are other complementary colours up or down from your main colour chip. This gives you various hues to complement your main colour.

If you reside in a two-storey home, you can start with one floor colour theme in the downstairs and then tackle the next floor later on. You don’t have to have the same colours but keep them neutral.

There are many colours to pick from – neutral beiges, greys and greige (beige and grey tones). You may want to make your hallways and entrances a shade darker from your colour palette to enhance your colour scheme. Whites for trim always stand out nicely. If you are not too sure of a colour, you can often get small samples to try. You might want to start in a small room, for example the powder room, to see if this colour is what you expected.

Pay attention to your lighting! Often what you see in the paint store is completely different in your home. Some stores offer how paint shades look under various lighting. This will help you see how the colour will present itself in your home.

Paint finishes can also be confusing with eggshell, matte, satin or various gloss finishes. Each provide a different look on the walls or trim. Eggshell paint looks great on walls and doesn’t provide too much of a sheen. Leave the semi-gloss finish for the trim.

Lastly, take a look at all the new colours for 2017. They range from more muted neutrals to bolder colours to provide specific accents to a room. If you are selling your home, the darker colours are better for a feature wall and should be used sparingly. Remember feature walls are to give the “wow” factor to a room and should not be used on a wall with many windows or doorways for example. What wall do you use as a feature wall? Usually the rule of thumb is for a wall that your eyes are drawn toward. You might want to feature a wall behind your bed or couch or the wall with a fireplace.
