It doesn’t matter which home you enter, different scents can permeate…some good…some not so good! When you are selling your home you want your home to be inviting not just in appearance but the aromas that will welcome you through the door.

Uninviting Scents:

  • Kitty litter (need we say more)
  • Last night’s dinner
  • Stale air

Inviting Scents

  • the smell of coffee
  • bread baking in the oven, or
  • Freshly washed laundry

Here are some tips to make your open house and showings are a memorable and lightly-scented experience.

Remember that many people are very sensitive to heavy scents in the home and you should factor in using scents that are milder or scents from nature. Some of the products that use your plug-in outlet or sprays that are very heavy in scent, can turn buyers away soon as they enter and then they will leave quickly. Before your open house in any season – let the fresh air in. You will want to air out all the rooms in your house for an hour or two.

Kitchen:

Have a candle lit in a secure area with scents of lemon. Add a simple bowl of lemons and limes on your counter or table to add a splash of colour to accompany or surround your candle. Another quick fix is to add a couple capfuls of vanilla in an oven proof dish set at 300 degrees for an hour in your oven. This will help get rid of some kitchen odors that can linger and it will smell like you have been baking cookies all morning.

Dining room:

A floral display not only adds colour and pizazz it can add a sweet aroma of your backyard garden. Make sure the flowers are light in scent and bright in colour. If flowers are too expensive – add a beautiful potted plant that you can display.

Bathroom or Laundry Room:

A mild fragrance of real lavender can add some mild fragrance without being overwhelming. Make sure your laundry room is tidy and free of dirty laundry.

Bedroom:

Who doesn’t love the scent of freshly washed laundry? Add some laundry-scented dryer sheets to your heating vents. Make sure that the linens on your bed are clean and freshly laundered.
