You may not be aware of the vibes you may be sending when selling your Ottawa real estate. Most of us crowd our homes with too many pieces of clothing, furniture, pictures, etc. Buyers can’t see your house to its full effect if it is overcrowded. Here are some helpful hints to shrink unnecessary items from your home.

Storage Space

If your cupboards or shelving is overcrowded you may be giving a red flag that you lack storage space. A simple solution for this is to allow them to be filled just half full. This goes for kitchen, bedroom or linen closets. If you have overcrowding, you just scream lack of space.

Remove a Third of Your Furniture

Most of us do not apply the minimalist rule that is used in staging and we have overcrowded rooms with too much furniture. Do you need all the side tables and ottomans? For example, an old china cabinet can date your room. So if you can remove this from your dining area and leave the buffet only (if your china cabinet comes in two parts) this will give much more needed space. Leave only some well-chosen furniture and artwork.

Put Your Kitchen On a Diet

Whether you are a master chef or your favourite cooking piece of equipment is the microwave, we often have too much on our kitchen counters. Put away or even better pack away small kitchen appliances, utensils, etc. that you don’t use often.

Front Door and Curb Appeal

Don’t neglect the exterior of your home.  Potential buyers often drive by Ottawa real estate to see if they would like a showing. If the front of your home is unappealing, they will not even bother to take a look inside. Add some fresh paint to your front door and trim. Don’t be too blah so that it is unappealing but going too bold can also turn away some people. Make sure your grass is cut and your front garden is free of weeds and plants are not too crowded.

Laundry and Mud Rooms

If you have a mud room entrance, make sure that you have pegs to hang up jackets and boot racks to reduce the clutter. Laundry rooms can be organized with some shelving and baskets to put various items in and reduce any disorganization.

It is surprising how much space we use up with various items we have in our lives. Simply reducing the clutter can make such a difference to your home. Just a few downsizing touches will make your home much more spacious and inviting.
