A basement can be many things to many people. Sometimes a day care, a tv room or even just for storage. When you are selling your home you often overlook what a few little changes can do to your basement for minimal money and very amazing results and added value to your home too.

If Your Basement is Unfinished and You Are Selling….

Don’t use your basement as a storage locker! Go through your items and if you have a separate area or room, move and stack them neatly in shelving units or bins or if you have a lot move valuables then perhaps a storage unit might be better. If you haven’t already done so, painting your concrete floor can liven up the area immensely and make it cleaner in appearance. Add a scatter rug and a few pieces of furniture. You will then create the look of added space and buyers can envision how they may wish to finish this area more effectively.

Planning on Finishing Your Basement?

If you are planning on finishing all or parts of your basement, you might want to look at adding some drywall to the ceiling and walls. Painting the walls and ceiling will bring new life and create an extension to your home. Warm up the area with some carpeting.  It will keep costs down and ramp up the coziness feel. Since moisture and humidity is often a factor, be careful if you are using water sensitive materials such as hardwood. This can often create mold and fungus or the wood can buckle over time.

How to Create a Basement Makeover?

Take a look at your basement and create a “home theatre” look by adding a darker “accent” wall behind your couch and position your other furniture together to make sure everyone can see the tv. Overhead pot lighting on dimmers or floor lamps can take the ambience to a new level.

If you have children, create an area just for them. Adding colourful rubber floor tiles and colourful bins for toys and games will embrace the look of neatness and fun. This will make this area look family-friendly yet eye appealing!

You can also section off various areas in your basement for entertainment area or bar and perhaps a home office or craft or workshop section in another area. All these can work together without looking too busy if they are staged correctly.
