If you are looking to make a few changes to your backyard without too much expense, here are some ideas. With just a few simple, inexpensive tricks you can add dimension, size and colour, especially if you are planning on selling your home this year.

Group your furniture. Insert some splashes of colour by adding accent pillows to patio furniture or benches. Add some potted plants or hanging baskets near corners or staggered on the stairs of your deck or patio. If you opt for clay pots, you can paint them bright colours to match your accent cushions or pillows. If you have a multi-tiered deck, you can divide the areas you would similar to your living space inside; some areas for eating, conversation or just relaxing.

Add a patterned outdoor carpet to your patio or deck. It will break up the look of stone or wood and add some pizazz and match it with your other accessories. These outdoor carpets are fairly inexpensive but really bring the look together.

If you want your hideaway to create a bold tropical look, add some large plants in colourful pots including hibiscus, large ferns or small potted trees. If you have a small backyard go for dwarf plants that grow vertically and don’t spread out. Make sure you have a variety of colour to add interest.

If you have a corner by the house, shed or garden, try to make this a focal point instead of a dead area by adding a flower or perennial garden. Vary this area with a small tree, some perennials in shades of greens and golds and perhaps add a few potted plants. Add some stone or river rocks to complement this area.

If your backyard tends to slope and you want to dress it up, try tiered and vertical planting by adding a few steps or raised flower beds to create height. Especially if you have a small backyard the creation of height will take away from lack of square footage.

Lastly adding pergolas for shade or arbours with climbing flowers add a sense of calm and tranquillity to any backyard. If this is not in your budget just add an oversized umbrella to your patio area. Just adding a little bit of shade creates the look of an oasis for the fraction of the price.

We hope these ideas can give you some thought on how you can add some dimension to your yards. Sprucing your backyard into a private getaway is always a good idea when you are going to sell your home.
